Obedience to Authority
The powerful pull to obey a legitimate authority, even when it feels wrong.
Evidence: well established. We label every concept honestly, and say so when it's a teaching model. How we rate evidence.
Shrink Definition
Obedience to authority is our strong tendency to follow the instructions of someone we see as legitimately in charge, even when it conflicts with our conscience. Classic studies showed ordinary people would go surprisingly far when an authority figure directed them. The setting and perceived legitimacy matter enormously. Understanding it helps us pause and question harmful orders.
Plain language
We tend to follow those we see as in charge, even against our conscience.
Shrink Insight
Ordinary people can do troubling things when an authority directs them.
Why it matters
It illuminates how good people can follow harmful orders, in institutions and history. It supports pausing to check orders against conscience.
Common misunderstanding
People assume only cruel individuals follow harmful orders. Situational pressure to obey authority can move ordinary people to act against their values.
Shrink Perspective
The person giving the order doesn't remove your responsibility.
Shrink Reflection
When have I followed an instruction I was unsure about?
Shrink Step
When an instruction troubles you, pause and check it against your own conscience.
Shrink Minute
Recall a time you followed an order you were unsure about, and why.
Shrink Takeaway
Legitimate authority doesn't make a wrong act right.
Medical boundary
This concept is educational and shouldn't be used to self-diagnose. It doesn't replace care from a licensed clinician. Symptoms, medication, and treatment decisions should be discussed with a qualified professional, and emergency symptoms require emergency care.
Evidence summary
Grounded in landmark and later obedience research, widely studied though also debated and re-examined.
