Mattering

Feeling that your existence makes a difference to someone.

Evidence: emerging. We label every concept honestly, and say so when it's a teaching model. How we rate evidence.

Shrink Definition

Mattering is the feeling that you're significant to others, that you would be missed and that your existence makes a difference. It has two sides, feeling depended on and feeling valued. It's distinct from belonging, which is about fitting in, since mattering is about counting. Low mattering is linked to loneliness and low mood, while high mattering supports meaning.

Plain language

The sense that you matter to others and would be missed.

Shrink Insight

Belonging is fitting in, but mattering is being counted.

Why it matters

It's a distinct driver of meaning and mental health, separate from mere belonging. Low mattering tracks with loneliness and low mood, so it's worth tending.

Common misunderstanding

People treat mattering as the same as belonging. Belonging is about fitting in, while mattering is about being significant and needed.

Shrink Perspective

We need not only to fit in, but to count.

Shrink Reflection

To whom do I matter, and who needs to hear that they matter to me?

Shrink Step

Tell one person specifically how and why they matter to you.

Shrink Minute

Name one person to whom you clearly matter, and one who matters to you.

Shrink Takeaway

To matter is to know you would be missed.

Medical boundary

This concept is educational and shouldn't be used to self-diagnose. It doesn't replace care from a licensed clinician. Symptoms, medication, and treatment decisions should be discussed with a qualified professional, and emergency symptoms require emergency care.

Evidence summary

A researched construct in sociology and psychology linked to wellbeing, with growing supportive evidence.
