Maslow Hierarchy

Needs stack. Address the bottom before you expect the top.

Evidence: established. We label every concept honestly, and say so when it's a teaching model. How we rate evidence.

Shrink Definition

Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs proposes that human motivation is organized in tiers: physiological (food, sleep, safety of the body), safety (stability, structure), belonging and love, esteem, and self actualization. Maslow's original writing framed the hierarchy loosely; the strict pyramid presentation is a later teaching simplification. Empirical support for a strict order is weak, but the framework remains useful for orienting attention to which needs are underfed in a given life.

Plain language

Maslow's hierarchy is a rough map of the different needs that motivate people.

Shrink Insight

You can't self actualize on an empty stomach and three hours of sleep.

Why it matters

Maslow's framework informs: workplace design, therapy prioritization, parenting, conversations about meaning, and diagnosing why someone stopped caring about something they used to care about.

Common misunderstanding

The strict pyramid order isn't empirically supported. People pursue meaning while hungry and neglect basics while comfortable. Treat it as a rough guide, not a law.

Shrink Perspective

When someone stops caring about the top of the pyramid, look at the bottom. The answer is usually there.

Shrink Reflection

Which level in your life is currently underfed?

Shrink Journal

For each level, write one sentence describing how well it's met right now. Where is the honest gap?

Shrink Step

Today, address the lowest underfed level, even in a tiny way. Water, a nap, one honest conversation, one moment of quiet.

Shrink Minute

The lower the need, the more urgent it feels when it's unmet.

Shrink Takeaway

Meaning is easier when the basics are handled.

Medical boundary

This concept is educational and shouldn't be used to self-diagnose. It doesn't replace care from a licensed clinician. Symptoms, medication, and treatment decisions should be discussed with a qualified professional, and emergency symptoms require emergency care.

Evidence summary

Maslow's original writings are more nuanced than the pyramid caricature suggests. Empirical support for a strict hierarchy of prepotency is weak. The framework remains a useful teaching heuristic when labeled as such.
