Frequency Illusion

New attention makes ordinary frequency feel like a sudden surge.

Evidence: emerging. We label every concept honestly, and say so when it's a teaching model. How we rate evidence.

Shrink Definition

The frequency illusion is when something you just noticed suddenly seems to appear everywhere. After a new word or idea catches your attention, your mind flags every instance and skips the ones it used to ignore. The world didn't change, your selective attention did. Two quirks combine, selective attention and confirmation.

Plain language

Once you notice something new, you start seeing it everywhere.

Shrink Insight

The spike is in your noticing, not in the world.

Why it matters

It explains a common eerie feeling and warns against reading meaning into it, which matters for anxiety and superstition. Knowing the mechanism defuses the sense that the pattern is a message.

Common misunderstanding

People take the sudden everywhere-ness as a sign or synchronicity. It's selective attention plus confirmation, not a change in reality.

Shrink Perspective

When something seems to follow you, suspect your attention first.

Shrink Reflection

What am I suddenly seeing everywhere, and did it really increase?

Shrink Step

When a new thing seems to appear everywhere, remember your filter just changed.

Shrink Minute

Recall a recent case, a car model or a name, that seemed to multiply after you noticed it.

Shrink Takeaway

You started counting, so the count went up.

Medical boundary

This concept is educational and shouldn't be used to self-diagnose. It doesn't replace care from a licensed clinician. Symptoms, medication, and treatment decisions should be discussed with a qualified professional, and emergency symptoms require emergency care.

Evidence summary

Widely observed and well explained by established attention and confirmation mechanisms, though the specific label has limited direct experimental study.
