Ego Ideal

Your inner standard of who you feel you should become.

Evidence: emerging. We label every concept honestly, and say so when it's a teaching model. How we rate evidence.

Shrink Definition

The ego ideal is the internal image of the person you aspire to be, the standard of who you feel you should become. It guides ambition and pride when you live up to it, and guilt or shame when you fall short. A realistic ego ideal inspires growth, while a punishing one fuels harsh self-criticism. Knowing yours helps you aim high without turning it into a whip.

Plain language

The internal image of the person you aspire to be.

Shrink Insight

We're pulled by an image of who we think we should be.

Why it matters

It shapes ambition, pride, and self-criticism depending on how realistic it is. Examining it helps aspiration inspire rather than punish.

Common misunderstanding

People think self-criticism comes only from outside standards. Much of it comes from an internal ideal we measure ourselves against.

Shrink Perspective

Aim for your ideal without letting it become a whip.

Shrink Reflection

Is my inner ideal kind, or does it punish me?

Shrink Step

Notice your inner ideal, and check whether it inspires or punishes you.

Shrink Minute

Name the person you feel you should be, and whether that image is kind.

Shrink Takeaway

Let your ideal pull you forward, not beat you up.

Medical boundary

This concept is educational and shouldn't be used to self-diagnose. It doesn't replace care from a licensed clinician. Symptoms, medication, and treatment decisions should be discussed with a qualified professional, and emergency symptoms require emergency care.

Evidence summary

A concept from psychodynamic theory, supported mainly by clinical and theoretical work.
